october 5. bay area prices have risen as michelle mentioned 16 cents a gallon since yesterday after a big jump earlier this week. the spike is blamed on refinery and pipeline problems in northern and southern california including the chevron refinery fire in richmond this summer. >> the panic could easily subside very quickly and things could calm down but we just don't know how quickly they are going to be able to get these supplies back online that we need. >> reporter: here's the latest damage according to aaa. nearly $4.60 a gallon in see if $4.52 in oakland, 4.60 in san francisco. some costcos in california have locked up their pumps running out of gas. in the bay area, costco has

gasoline. gas average is 4 something? $5.39 a gallon in cupertino. it depends on the it station you go to. we have the information on the cheapest gas in your neighborhood at our website, cbssf.com/gas. >> never thought $4 would be a bargain. several big events planned in the bay area over the weekend and the highway patrol is preparing for traffic gridlock especially here in san francisco. cbs 5 traffic reporter elizabeth wenger joins us from san francisco to explain what areas to avoid. i guess everything. it is so busy. >> reporter: it is. that's the funny thing. the waterfront and the embarcadero, marina green, that's where a lot of stuff is going on. but yeah, there are so many events it's spread out throughout the city, north beach, castro district, unfortunately there's no great area traffic-wise this weekend. so this is going to be one of the busier spots. we are here along pier 30-32. it's dark but we have a big navy vessel you can tour for fleet week and in addition, if

that wasn't enough, we have the america's cup sailing yachts behind me here, as well. so if yesterday was any indication, it's going to be very busy and loud this saturday and sunday. the blue angels practiced yesterday. don't drive. parking even if you get here will be extra difficult. to avoid gridlock, avoid the waterfront, use less popular bridges like the san mateo bridge. if fleet week and america's cup weren't enough, a few other things are going on. it's all over the city. hardly strictly bluegrass in golden gate park. 49ers at candlestick. castro street fair, florence and the machine in mountain view, madonna in san jose, justin bieber in oakland. so it's making me exhausted

just saying everything and that's not all. use mass transit. bart ferries muni are all ramping up service. if earlier this week was any indication of what we should expect, this weekend bart had two of their top ten ridership days yesterday and the day before. so just expecting it to be pretty crazy on saturday and sunday. by the way, san francisco's mayor says they have got these crowds handled so everyone should just chill out. probably easier said than done. for the latest on the events this weekend, go to our website, cbssf.com weekend. what's going on in traffic? >> it is very quiet. not a lot going on in fact mass transit problem-free a close eye on this today and throughout the weekend because it's going to be busy. bart with 39 trains on time now. ace, muni, caltrain, ferries, no delays. elsewhere if you are going to commute through the south bay so far, so good northbound 101 clocking in nice speeds. 280 through downtown san jose

no delays. highway 17 clear this morning. here's a live look at conditions through milpitas. westbound 237, 880 to 101 just an easy 6-minute commute right now and so far your travel times in the south bay are in the green. so an easy right. golden gate bridge nice ride. quick look at conditions on the san mateo bridge so far, so good both directions only 14 minutes between foster city and hayward. that's a look at your morning drive. here's lawrence with your forecast. >> didn't want to disappoint. i know you love the low clouds and we have plenty today stretching onshore. it's going to be slow to break up throughout the day today. cloudy over the city of san francisco. and there's actually another cloud deck above that some high clouds above this low cloud deck pushing on through. temperatures right now a little cool in the north bay 49 degrees in santa rosa. 58 in concord. 58 degrees in san francisco and cloudy skies. well, it looks like it is going to be a cool friday. usually in the 70s or the 80s. a couple of days ago we were

talking triple digits. not even close. today we are going to struggle to get to the mid-70s in the warmest spots, maybe 74 in livermore, about 6 degrees below average. 11 degrees below the average in santa rosa at 69. we'll have more on the weekend forecast coming up in a bit. >> thank you. flying american this morning you might want to check if your flight is still on. cbs 5 reporter cate caugiran is live at sfo right now. cate, we know loose seats are forcing some cancellations. so the big question, how many flights are canceled and when are they going to be back in the air? >> reporter: well, michelle, 44 flights have been canceled nationwide including two here from san francisco airport and those flights are heading to miami or were headed to miami and orlando. so that's right, check your flight this morning. american airlines says they expect to have things back on track by tomorrow. now, the airline pulled 48 boeing 757s out of service to make these repairs so there will be thousands of unhappy

travelers today. the repairs started earlier this week after loose seats were reported on two separate 757s that were actually recently refurbished. american airlines says they have used the same seats for 20 years without problems until now. passengers on these flights recall the moments midair as traumatic. >> seats flipped backwards. it was actually a complete nightmare. >> the wear and tear on the locking mechanism allowed them to become dislodged. >> reporter: american airlines said the problem is due to a champ that hold seats to the tracks on the floor and now they believe it was a combination of wear, poor design and even soda spilled on the tracks. new fix includes an additional locking mechanism. federal officials are continuing a safety investigation into american airlines. no other airline reported similar problems. american or united airlines

doesn't use the same type of seats and u.s. airways says they use a different type of hardware to lock down those seats. we are live at sfo. cate caugiran, cbs 5. the meningitis outbreak blamed for at least five deaths has reached the state of california. tainted steroid drug now boeing blamed for the outbreak of fungal meningitis in six states. symptoms include headache, nausea, dizziness, fever. but those symptoms are also linked to other medical conditions. >> that makes it different and perhaps some patients and certainly some doctors wouldn't think of meningitis right away if the patient presented primarily with those kinds of symptoms. >> the steroid suspected in the outbreak is used to treat back pain. 34-year-old contra costa county man died of rabies two months ago while working overseas. now they think he contracted the fatal disease in march when he came into contact with a bat in southern contra costa county. it is the county's first rabies death in nearly 20 years.

health officials plan a briefing today to give people the warning to avoid handling bats and other wildlife. san francisco police say they arrested a man in connection with murders that happened over the summer. 23-year-old keith wilkins was already in custody for a probation violation. investigators believe he killed two gang members in the visitacion valley neighborhood back in july. the killings were part of multiple shootings within a week in the area. some civil rights attorneys want a federal judge to intervene in the city of oakland's efforts to reform its police force. this stems from a case 12 years ago when four police officers dubbed the riders were accused of imposing vigilante justice. albany police now say there were multiple alleged victims of the teacher arrested for committing lewd acts with a minor. that teacher, 28-year-old james izumizaki, was found dead monday. investigators say he committed suicide. the morgan hill mom accused of ditching her daughter at a safeway after a botched shoplifting attempt is back in

the bay area. police say marcey keeling told her little girl to push a cart out of the store and abandoned her when she was caught. keeling was found in nevada. pg&e is trying to get out of paying punitive damages to people who survived the bruin pipeline explosion. san francisco-based utility made its argument in a new court filing saying it didn't know the pipe was fatally flawed. pg&e is now trying to settle dozens of civil suits related to the explosion which killed 8 people and injured dozens of others two years ago. on to the presidential race, the two major candidates are expected to focus on jobs today after the government releases september employment statistics. president obama and mitt romney both hit the campaign trail yesterday following their first debate in colorado. the president acknowledged romney's stellar performance but said romney can't pay for his tax plan without sticking it to the middle class. >> we can't afford to double

back, too. she didn't take that. but she did take the six grand. they were 100 miles apart. the dog down in los banos. it's "friday light" so gianna you have an easy day so far. >> so far, so good. in fact, we're going to show you live conditions on some of our bay area bridges. you can see the bay bridge is cruising along with no delays as you work your way through there easing into san francisco. same for the san mateo bridge, easy from foster city to hayward. taillights westbound towards 101. elsewhere if you are planning on taking 101 this morning, so far, so good both directions not showing any problems right now. we're seeing lots of green on our sensors so good news there. there is a live look at conditions 101 both directions near candlestick and you can see traffic is free-flowing through there. also free-flowing off the eastshore freeway. 62 miles per hour for the most part. looks like westbound 80 gets a little slower towards the bay bridge toll plaza. but overall, an easy ride there no delays in the maze right now. we have some roadwork along the

peninsula in pacifica devil's slide alternating lanes due to roadwork. alternating lanes vallemar to 10th street until 10:00. 880 at mission roadwork scheduled there until 6:00 this morning. looks like both directions though not showing any delays just yet. there are couple of lanes open but again various lanes closed in both directions through the area. 15 minutes westbound 580 from the altamont pass to 680 and antioch seeing slight delays westbound as you work your way near loveridge. that's a look at your "timesaver traffic." here's lawrence with your forecast. >> all right, gianna. happy friday, folks. if you are headed out the door, we have low clouds that have stretched well onshore this morning. looks like an even cooler day ahead and, boy, those 90s, hot 100-degree temperatures long gone now. outside, looking at manically in the 50s although we have seen some temperatures drop into the upper 40s in parts of the north bay valleys. by the afternoon a little sunshine, tomorrow very mild

temperatures mid-70s on the high-end. you will see 60s, many a few 70s around the bay and at the coast temperatures in the 50s and 60s. that low pressure area moving closer to the coastline. that will bring with it that cool air and we can already see some high clouds rotating around the system keeping temperatures down through the weekend. monday a chance of a few showers. across the state temperatures running well below average. about 76 degrees in sacramento. 81 in fresno. about 78 degrees and partly cloudy skies in yosemite and also lake tahoe. around the bay, clouds beginning to clear out but temperatures staying cool. 71 degrees in santa clara, about 71 in san jose, 64 degrees in pacifica, east bay temperatures where you had some 90s and triple digits just a few days ago, struggling to get into the mid-70s by the afternoon. 71 degrees in the napa valley and 72 in walnut creek. inside the bay 67 degrees, slow clearing into oakland today and 65 degrees and leftover clouds into san francisco. next couple of days the big

ferries, no delays. ferries look ramping up service. brakes through the altamont pass westbound 580 slight delay 16 minutes as you work your way towards 680. that's a look at your morning drive. lawrence i understand we're getting a cooldown? >> oh, my goodness, yeah! it's already begun. low clouds urge insurgenting well onshore right now. if you are headed out the door, grab a jacket. it's going to be cool the better part of the day especially as you approach the coastline. 50s one low 60 now in mountain view, cool 49 in santa rosa. toward the afternoon, though, these temperatures staying well below the average. 75 degrees some sunshine into morgan hill, 71 in san jose, east bay temperatures where just a couple of days ago where you had triple digits temperatures not close today struggling to get into the mid- 70s and inside the bay we'll find 65 degrees a few leftover clouds in san francisco and 67 degrees in sausalito. a complete look at the weekend forecast plus the prospect for a little rain coming our waste coming up in a few minutes. >> all right, lawrence. thank you. this just in now. one of the biggest financial reports of the month came out

just a few minutes ago. the labor department says the nation's unemployment rate was 7.8% last month. and that's down from 8.1% in august. that's the lowest rate since january of 2009. cbsmoneywatch reporter ashley morrison will have more in 10 minutes. an already ugly week gets worse for american airlines. more flights have been canceled including two from the bay area already this morning. cbs 5 reporter cate caugiran over at sfo this morning. cate, i guess had time it's not about the pilots but the seats, right? >> reporter: that is exactly right, frank. now, imagine being one of these passengers. you're sitting midair and a row of seats fall on your lap. that was the reality for these passengers earlier this week. now, american airlines says they do have a fix. but that will mean delays and flight cancellations nationwide. in fact, the repair work has canceled 44 flights to date including two from sfo to miami and orlando.

earlier this week some passengers vowed never to fly again after what they recall was a terrifying experience. >> seats flipped backwards. it was actually a complete nightmare. >> we're going through the fleet and adding an additional locking feature on top of this that will what we believe, you know, prevent this from happening again. >> reporter: now, the airline says they have traced the problem to saddle collapse. those secure the seats to the floor of the plane. in addition, they attribute it to a compensation of wear, poor design and some soda on the tracks. now, so far, workers have identified a loose row of seats on six planes. federal officials say they are continuing a safety investigation. now, this all stems from two separate incidents that were reported earlier this week. but american airlines says they plan to have all flights back running on track tomorrow. we're live at sfo. cate caugiran, cbs 5. contra costa county health officials will explain today why you should never handle bats and other wildlife. a 34-year-old contra costa county man died of rabies two

consider this morning. ashley morrison of cbsmoneywatch.com is here with the employment report that just came in. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, frank and michelle. stock futures are higher on much better-than-expected news on the jobs front just out this morning. the unemployment rate actually fell to 7.8% last month dropping below 8% for the first time of in almost four years that rate declined because more people found jobs. the labor department says 114,000 jobs were added in september. economists were predicting employers added only 111,000 jobs last month. and that the unemployment rate would edge up to 8.2% from 8.1%. so definitely some better-than- expected news out there on the jobs front. asian markets up this morning after the bank of japan announced no change in the country's key interest rate. the kay up .5%, hong kong's hang seng added .5%. on thursday the slightly better-than-expected weekly

jobless claims gave the market a lift dow up 80, nasdaq up 14. and mortgage rates fell to record lows for the second straight week according to freddie mac. the 30-year fixed-rate mortgage was 3.63% and fixed year loan 2.69%. record low rates have led more homeowners to refinance and experts say that trend could help jump-start the economy. back to the monthly jobs report, it really could also be having a big impact on the presidential election. there will only be one more monthly jobs report released before the election. >> i'm sure it's welcome news for the president. >> reporter: i think so. >> thank you, ashley morrison, cbsmoneywatch.com. have a great weekend. thanks. let's check on the weather. >> i'm looking at twitter. it's snowing in denver right now. >> amazing! looking at some of the coldest temperatures they have seen maybe a foot of snow in northern minnesota. it's amazing for this time of

year. that's quite a cold outlook. not a cold outbreak but a cooler pattern here in the bay area. low clouds have surged onshore and it, look like they are going to stick around into the weekend. those low clouds are going to be slow to break up throughout the day today. so toward the afternoon it's going to be cool to mild outside. and then the weekend looks like it is going to stay well below the average as low pressure is going to start to swing over the bay area. it does not look like much but this is that low sitting off the coastline finally tracking in our direction and eventually moves in to spring a couple of showers on us as we head in toward monday. but the weekend looks dry. it's going stay cool. sfo no delays but that may change mostly cloudy to start the day and partly cloudy into the afternoon. cool weather around the country. denver a high of 50 degrees. they will see a mix of snow and rain. 55 in chicago. about 79 degrees in new york. around the bay today, we'll find sunshine in the afternoon but cooler temperatures 71 degrees in san jose. 68 in fremont. about 70 degrees in hayward and

breezy. mid-70s into brentwood. about 74 in livermore and only about 71 degrees in the napa valley today. slow clearing in through the central bay only about 67 degrees in oakland. leftover clouds into san francisco about 65. and about 69 degrees in santa rosa. next couple of days it may get cool enough in the atmosphere to help mix out some low clouds and fog and that will be good for of course fleet week with the blue angels flying around. by monday there is a chance we could see a couple of raindrops and dry out, warmer toward the middle of next weeks. let's check the roads with gianna. it continues to be "friday light" this morning. in fact, easy as you work your way across our bay area bridges this morning. live look at conditions at the bay bridge toll plaza. overall nice. san mateo bridge same story no troubles. everything is moving right along between foster city and hayward an easy ride 14 minutes between 880 and 101. now, elsewhere, if you are work your way towards the golden gate bridge, we have some early- morning construction north 101 at sir francis drake.

we are seeing some slight delays on the southbound side as well showing some yellow there on our sensors. we'll get an update on when that's going to clear. should be wrapped up by 6:00. live look at the golden gate bridge and you can see traffic is easy once you hit the golden gate bridge past the waldo tunnel. only 14 minutes south 101 from 580 to the golden gate bridge toll plaza. elsewhere we just checked in with our mobile5 unit. alan brooks is cruising around in our mobile5 kcbs unit and just came off the richmond/san rafael bridge. he is now working his way towards the eastshore freeway. the traffic is very nice. you can see there in our live shot traffic is cruising along westbound carquinez bridge to the maze most of our east bay drive times are in the green. 580 we are seeing some drive times inch up a bit but overall only 17 minutes from the altamont pass to 680. negotiable 880, 238 to the maze 13 minutes, westbound 4 in the green, no delays to the caldecott tunnel. south bay looks good northbound 101 clear through san jose. and no delays right now on 280 through downtown san jose. that's a look at your "timesaver traffic." back to you guys. >> thank you. in your world this morning,

an american opened fire at a hotel in israel today killing a chef before he was shot and killed by police. police in the resort city of elat say the shooting appears to stem from a personal dispute. the gunman's name hasn't been released yet. police say antiterror units stormed the hotel and when the gunman fired at them from the hotel kitchen, officers fired back. bodies of 18 children and an adult have been found after a landslide buried an elementary school in southwest china. one person is still reported missing. the students were in class during a public holiday yesterday to make up for classes missed during resent earthquakes. -- recent earthquakes. at least 80 people were killed in those quakes. a state parole board panel has recommended the release of a former charles manson follower. bruce davis was sentenced to life in prison in 1972 for his role in two murders. they one related to the sharon tate killings. parole recommend -- they were unrelated to the sharon tate killings. parole recommendations would be considered by the entire board and would need approval by
